I don't know if I have a cracked coil on my 6hp but want to know if epoxy will fill the crack for reliable but temporary use.

Yes it could fill the crack but that does not mean the coil would not arc out of another spot on the case.I have had them jump spark right through the side of a perfectly good looking coil.Best bet is to just replace it.

Temporary, yes...reliable no. Once they crack, moisture gets inside and they are not reliable. They will fail...and usually out on the water, in my limited experience.

Everyone knows, electrical components run on smoke. Once cracked, you've already let the smoke out.

They aren't that expensive. You can probably buy one from iboats. While you are at it, might as well replace the other one, it is not far behind.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Shoot, for not much more than an epoxy kit, you can replace the coil! With an epoxied coil, it is much more likely to fail than a new coil. And, as Murphy's Law dictates, the coil will fail when you can least afford it to, .ie a cruise boat is bearing down on you, a storm is brewing, or the wife has gone into labor... you get the picture.

You have it all wrong, electrical components only smoke when they crack and get water in them.

Patrick, it's an old joke, man.

"I've discovered computers run on smoke!"

"What? What do you mean?"

"Well, I let the smoke out and now my computer doesn't work."

Great example of a good observation leading to incorrect conclusion.

Yea I know.
I had an electric motor at work let out some smoke once. Then it stoped working.

.........and Murphy was considered by all the mariners who knew him to be a wide-eyed optimist.
