From my house to Tahoe (170 miles)got 15.6 mpg at approx 70-75 and we had to go over 8000' pass to 6200' :), filled up right before we left and waiting on those figures, is looking even better :). Highway beats city mpg big time!

Was that towing? Did you check your air pressure in the tires? 15 MPG is average for the 4WD.

My 99 Tahoe with the 5.7 gets about the same. When i'm hooked to the travel trailer or boat i'm getting 10 mpg...Thats an average. In the mountains and towing i'm getting 8 to 9...ouch!

Just filed up tonight and ended up getting 16 mpg, BUT I had two days of city/stop and go/highway along with trip back from Tahoe, bettin I could get 18 on a total flat highway drive? What other problems have you guys had with the 5.7? I love the power and at 101K w / full synth. oil and regular seafoam, no big problems -just serviced tranny looked great. I did put metallic pads on front, how are the ceramics? No sign of trany problems I've heard about and mine has the full tow package/cooler setup and I don't tow anymore. Thanks, Heinz

The only major work i have had to do was the intake manifold gaskets. That was at 95 thousand miles.Very common on these motors.Keep an eye on your coolant level.
I run the ceramic pads with good luck. They have way less brake dust.I just replaced the original rear brake shoes at 97k and they still were not completely worn out.I also run the full synthetic oil. When i had the top of the engine apart i was amazed how clean it was.Good oil and seafoam do make a difference.
Another good thing about these model trucks is they actually have grease fittings for all the ball joints and steering parts.
Keep everything greased and the oil changed and you should be good for another 100k....;)

You guys have shoes on the rear, I have disc on my 99 (same as 2000) Silverado. I read somwhere that Chev/GMC went back to shoes on rear because of salt damage on the east coast. We don't see salt on the raods here. They use a liquid and try to get it on before it ices up. The state gets plenty of practice with all our mountain passes, especially in years like this one. All of the passes have been closed at one time or the other this winter, sometimes for several days.
