Serial number doesn't seem to match???

I have what I believe to be a 1967 950ss. At least the boat is a '67 and the motor is a 950ss. I've looked at the serial number charts and mine is lower than the starting number? How do I know for sure what I have? # 1854718

Thats a serial number off a 1965, 900

If it came off a 900 then why does it say 950ss and 95 HP six all over the motor?

It's your motor you tell me, I simple told you what Mercury Marine says the serial number is off from.

Is it possible that the transom clamp is off of a 900 and the motor is a 950ss? It just doesn't make a lot of sense. It seems that they only made the 950ss for a couple years so as long as there isn't a difference between them then I guess it doesn't matter.
