1985 115 hp inline 6- Too Loud!!!

I have a 1985 Tower of Power 115hp. Does anybody know how to make it a little quieter? I have the liner installed around the cowling but that doesn't make much difference. Is there anything else that works better???

This is a question that doesn't show up all that much, so I might start to think that something about your particular motor, or situation might make it louder than others?

So start looking at your particular situation.

Is the correct tuner in place? It's like a tube/ exhaust pipe/ muffler under the powerhead, in the midsection.

Is it a jet drive?

Is there some sort of internal mechanical condition making noise? and in need of repair?

Are you sitting right next to it?

In some applications just the sound of any motor to the cockpit and dash can get reflected back to you and be very loud. (but that can be more from boat design and harmonics than a particular model motor)

It doesn't have that tuner...I wasn't even aware of that. Does that quiet it down a bit?
I had an old Johnson 115 on before this and it was much quieter, Although it was a V-4 so it had a lower pitch to the sound but I think it also has to do with cowling. The Johnson was a 1 piece and better insulated I think than the 3 piece Merc cowling.
it is a prop drive.

I don't believe you would know for sure about the tuner unless you pulled the powerhead off the midsection.. It runs down the inside of the midsection...at least that is what I understand from reading posts here..
