Ignition Coil Compatibility Question

Is an ignition coil from a 1977 Evinrude 115hp compatible with a 1979 Evinrude 115hp? If not, would that cause two cylinders to not fire all the time or make the engine die at idle? Would it make the engine run bad basically? Underpowered?

Thanks,

Matt

Re: Ignition Coil Compatibility Question

If you check on the BRP site and the part numbers are the same for the parts from both years, this could help you.

This sounds like power pak problem to me, but I am not familiar with your ignition system. If you have two PP's, switch them and see it the problem follows a pack. Got a manual?

Re: Ignition Coil Compatibility Question

I found on the website that the two coils are not compatibable. The guy I had bought the motor from didn't know this and used one from the 77 Evinrude. I have been running the engine for a few months. Would this cause major problems with the engine running?

if that's the case, it would cause the symptoms you described. might have fouled the spark plugs in those cylinders. slight possibility of damage to other electronic ignition components, you can check that out with a spark test after you get your new coils in - pull all the plugs and ground the leads, set the spark tester (couple bucks at auto parts store) to 7/16" and look for sharp blue spark while somebody turns the engine over.

the coils are not compatiable, which motor do you have. 77 or 79? the 79 has 2 power paks, you could have a bad power pack, as Mark suggested, swap the paks, and see if the problem follows the pak.

Re: Ignition Coil Compatibility Question

I have the 79. I cannot swap the power packs because the boat is at the mechanics shop waiting to be worked on. I think I might see if he has a new coil for my engine, then replace it and try it out on the lake. Does that sound like a good idea? Could I mess up the engine if the power pack is bad?

Re: Ignition Coil Compatibility Question

If one of the powerpacks is bad, you will be running on less than 4 cylinders, and you won't be getting spark to the cylinders. If all plugs are firing with the new ignition coil, the packs are probably good.

well if the mech is worth his salt, he should notice the wrong coils. and test the power packs.

Re: Ignition Coil Compatibility Question

I hope he will. He hasn't looked at it yet. It won't be looked at until Tuesday. I was hoping to fix the problem before they looked at it so I didn't have to pay a mechanic.

Re: Ignition Coil Compatibility Question

It turns out I needed a new coil and I had to clean out the carbs.
