I was recently given a older model evenrude by my aunt. It is either a 50's or early 60's motor. I ordered one of those old gas tanks off of ebay because it did not come with one. Motor was my uncle's before he passed away. It ran 3 years ago the last time he used it. My question is on the gas mix what should I mix regular motor oil or a evinrude/johnson mix and what the ratio should be.

Re: Older model evinrude

When you find the model number on the engine, you should follow the BRP/Evinrude general guidelines found here for the age of the engine: http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/About.Us/FAQ/Oil.Fuel.htm

Use TCW-3 rated oil or better. Many have gone to synthetic blends or full synthetic TCW-3. The synthetic oils tend to smoke less and produce less carbon.

You may find the Engine FAQ forum helpful, especially the thread about "Awakening......"

Model number should be on a plate attached to the port (left) transom bracket (bracket that attaches engine to boat). If you have a problem finding the ID of that model number, list it here.

If it's the pressure 2-line tank you can almost bet it's a 24:1 ratio, but it could be 16:1. You'll have to find out the year and horsepower as already said.
How about a picture? (I always like to see 'em)

Is it a metal hood or fibreglass? And is it a 1 line or 2 line tank? As JB said, if it's a 2 line then it's 24:1 high chance.
