Shifting dog 1999 15 hp

I have a 1999 johnson that I bought from the neighbor. He had a problem with it staying in the forward gear He had taken the lower unit apart before I
got it. As it turns out the trust bearing for the main shaft was broken . I have a parts schematic and have ordered a shop manual. I want to put it back together and l have a question on the shifting dog. One side has a smaller dog with a groove cut around it. It appears as though it would work either way but would like to know which way is correct. That is groove toward the forward or reverse gear

I had the same question about the shift dog in my 1960 40hp. I was told the groove faces the prop.

Correct, whether it be a groove or a p, it faces the prop.
