Replacing trim cylinder

Trim cylinder leaking where the rod goes through the end cap. Apparently I have to replace as they are unrepairable. Some water entered the system and is slightly milky. Pump needed a bump to start running a couple of times after sitting for a long period towards the end of the season, but fine once running. Assuming it is the water in system.

I am planning to replace the one cylinder that is leaking, fluid and o-rings on the line. Was wondering if I should do anything else while I am at it. Lines original but look OK. How easily/often do trim lines fail? I wouldn't think/hope I would replace the other cylinder if not leaking. Otherwise repair looks fairly straight forward, but expensive. Any tips or thoughts appreciated.

Just replace the bad one, don't start replacing things that aren't broken. Those lines should last for many, many years if not damaged by something.

I dunno how mechanically inclined you are or want a project but I rebuild one of my VP trim cylinders. Is the shaft pitted? Mine was and I had to disassemble the trim cylinder and had shaft re-plated and replaced all the seals. (local hydraulic shop). I spent about 75 total on my rebuild, if by chance the shaft is in good shape you conceivably could rebuild yours for way less, seals are cheap. All that being said , I agree with Don, if you want to replace it I would just do the leaking one, they are not cheap. There are small o-rings where the lines screw into the cylinders , buy /replace and a cylinder and you are goods to go. As far as the milky oil, you need to get that out, I pumped as much of it out as I could with oil change pump, refilled with ATF, cycled drive up and down couple times to mix fluid. Plumped oil out of reservoir. Repeated numerous times until oil stayed clean. If you don't want to mess with rebuilding yours please don't throw it away, I will pay the shipping and you can send it to me , I will rebuild it as spare because I know it is only a matter of time until my 2nd one leaks.

That is interesting. Mine is fine except for the end cap where the shaft enters the cylinder. It almost looks like some one chipped away at it. One would think it would only be a cap and o-rings. Not sure where I would find a hydraulic shop around Philly, but you think they could repair?

I am not sure they would disassemble/repair it for you. I found a couple local shops to me but I just took old parts in (seals/o-rings) and they measured/matched them up. I just re-read your post and your cap is pitted/damaged that might be a bigger issue. VP does not sell the caps/parts separately, only the complete ram assembly. The end cap is VP specific, so I suspect a hydraulic shop is not going to be able to help you with "hard parts", only seals o-rings etc.

Am about to try re-sealing mine. Do you have anymore tips or detailed instructions? Thank you.
