Re: 1988 Johnson GT 150 ignition problem

The problem is in black/yellow wire, in the engine harness, where it splits to the two packs, or the pack is bad. The drop in rpms when you turn off the key tells you wiring is good from switch to one pack. If the engine has only one pack, pack is bad.

Got up early today and did the test that ezeke recommended. All checked out OK. Did some continuity test on the engine harness from the big red connector to the grounds and to the blk/yel connectors at the power packs. All checked out OK. After reading back through ezeke's post, and this morning clanton's post, I decided to re-check the power packs. I originally tested them together with jumper wires to both and grounded the jumpers at the same time. Engine cut off immediatly so I assumed they were both good and I had a short in the wiring. This morning I placed the jumpers back on the powerpacks and started the engine. I grounded the jumpers one at a time. I noticed that when I grounded the powerpack on the opposite side from the starter the engine tried to stall. Next I grounded the jumper on the other powerpack and got no change in the engine at all. I tried this test two more times making sure I had a good connection at my jumpers. Same results. I assume that the pack that made no change to the engine is bad. Any recomendations on what brand replacement or where to purchase a new one? iboats has 3 listed for my year and model. They are CDI, Sierra, and Mallory.

Thanks again for everyone's help and suggestions with my problem.

My 1st choice from iboats would be CDI.

You might want to download and save the CDI Electronics' Troubleshooting Guide to your computer so you have it on hand. At 84 pages, its a bit much to print, but most of the retailers use it as the basis for their ignition troubleshooting guides and it is the most comprehensive.
