Hi, i found your forum because i was looking for a place to ask a stupid question and the people here seem to know their stuff :)

I recently purchased (in mid winter) a used 47 lb thrust Motor Guide trolling motor (hand controlled) and as i was putting it on my boat today I noticed the bottom fin is broke off (below the prop). It is going on a 16 ft flat bottom duracraft as the primary motor. How will the broken fin affect things? I haven't got a chance to get it out in the water yet. Thanks in advance!

Re: Motor Question

Ayuh,....... Welcome Aboard,..........

I wouldn't worry to much about a broken Skeg,.....
You probably will Never notice it,... At All.......
You'll be using the motor's Thrust to steer,... So it's Not like you need the extra Rudder....

Re: Motor Question

The skeg is there to protect the prop. Without the skeg the prop will extend below the motor and if you get into the shallows, stump fields, rock piles, etc., hitting one will likely damage the prop. Other than that, you won't miss the skeg from a performance standpoint.

Re: Motor Question

If that will be your primary source of power you might want to consider the Trojan 30XHS battery 130 amp hour.Excellent true deep cycle battery.I have 6 in my Gem elactric car.A very tough application car reduces the 6 batteries to 40% in less than an hour yet they have lasted 3 years.About $150.
