Fluid leak at prop shaft

There is a small fluid leak at the prop shaft, dripping out the hub of the prop. Behind the prop and thrust bearing on my 1996 Johnson 112, there is a seal (probably double side) with a spring on it. Can I just pop it out without tearing into the unit and replace it with as new one?

Thanks (Go Jaguars)

Re: Fluid leak at prop shaft

What is leaking? Is it lower unit lube or is it a black oil looking leak?

If black oil looking leak it is exhaust oil from unburned premix coming through the exhaust.

If it is milky looking water and oil mixture then it is a lu leak.

If you do not have a manual get one, they are money well spent and wil save tyou hundreds in repair costs.

It is black oil, and as you said, it is probably unburned oil coming through the exhaust. Does this mean I am mixing too much oil in my mixture? The mechanic told me to go with 40:1 instead of 50:1 and my motor would be better protecyed. Or should I not be concerned with a little black oil now and then? THANKS
