82 115 mercury

i am looking at buying a boat with a 82 115 mercury running motor i am used to evin john and know nothing about mercury I fish mostly in salt and flush every time and have had no problems with E?J motors i have been told merc motors do not have stainless steel shafts and is bad to run in salt. any info would be helpful

As long as you flush after every use you will be fine. Next time your out notice how many Mercs are out there just purring along.

Rustlyn, I am not sure the statement about the stainless steel components on Mercs is true. That Merc has SS drive and shift shafts, as well as PTT components. You will likely find the same in a comparable OMC product of the same vintage.

Now my old '59 Fat Fitfy had a lot more stainless than modern motors. Actually it had all brass or stainless fasteners. The trim on the motor hood was stainless. There were no external steel components at all.

Some older Mercs had steel shafts....replaced long before 82 though with SS
