Re: How many outboards do you own?

it was fantastic it hadn't been started 15 years. I'm putting it on the boat next week end.

Dan

Congratulations, Dan. I hope you install a new impeller before you put it on the boat. I'd hate to see you fry it.

BaconBiscuit,
That is awesome news! I hope you thanked unc! Like WBeaton said, if that impeller comes apart and puts impeller vanes up in your powerhead, it will plague the crap out of you even if it doesn't fry the motor.....Just check the merc threads and see all the horrors that happen when folks use old impellers. (Not that the same thing doesn't happen with other brands). Don't push your luck with it. That is too sweet of a motor to ruin. Oh, and I got my 25 running but it's not quite as easy to crank as your 20.

It's great and I did thank my uncle he was very happy to here that i had it running. As for the impeller i posted in the merc forum as to wether i should replace it or not i'm sure they will all say to replace. however i'm to much of a panzie to do it myself even though i have replaced one before i think i'll take it in to Merc Mechanic and have them do it because i don't want to mess this sweet engine up.

By the way I use to hate Mercury witha passion and look at me now talking it up.

Re: How many outboards do you own?

I am an OMC man myself, but Dad used to run the old 20's like your's because the lower unit was so tough and we have lots of stumps. Myself, I think when a person has a 20 that's "right" like your's, they're hard to beat. Boy, do they crank easy when warm and put out the power! The only problem we had is that it had so much torque it was hard on the transom corners. FAST, too. I also like the unique hummmmmm of those '70's 20 hp's on wide open. It had kind of a cool "rolling" sound. Brings back memories of when there were some ducks coming south.
I will say that Dad always had to crank the crap out of it on cold mornings and he was a roughneck in the oilfields for years and had arms like oak trees. One morning I was sitting on the second seat like an idiot when I was about 12 while he was cranking on that danged thing and he caught me under the chin with a hard pull and I wound up on the front seat of the 15 foot duracraft we used. Boy it ran good when warm, though.:D

By the way, that impeller is pretty easy, but I can see your point....I screw up more than I fix sometimes and would be worried I'd booger it up, too. don't think that your mechanic is infallible, though. It happens to everyone.
Looking forward to the pics,

When i was cranking the other 20hp which I never really got running ihad my friend behind me well you can guess what happened he almost lost lunch.

The "new" twenty start on half a pull warm. And also my friend is coming over this weekend he has video camera so I also post a video if i can.

i know what were saying on how they run the Johnny rudes have a completely different sound this one has the hard to explain rolling sound like you said and it sounds cool. Also aluminum boat is rated for 18 but its all i got and all i can afford at this time only being 14 so being just a little overpowered won't hurt anything unless i get into some accident with another baot then i might have a law suite but other than that and a impeller i should be good to go! i'm still debating weather i Should change the impeller myself though it depends on how much support i get from the merc Forum. I wish the impeller i replaced in the other 20hp was same one required for this one because if that were the case i wouldn't have to put it any money into this money but hey i better not push my luck its already running nice!!

Re: How many outboards do you own?

Just 2 for me, however I am looking for a kicker right now.
I have a 1985 140hp Johnson V4 looper and a 1968 Evinrude 40hp bigtwin that is undergoing renovation. I will most likely find a suitable hull for this one when the restoration is completed.

Update,
Just been given a 7.5 Mercury twin for free that needs rings and a rebore by the looks of it. Also the regular service items and we will see what happens. I will do all my own machining so that will keep the cost down some.
Looks like I found my trolling motor !!!!!

Beautiful. Those 1960's Mercs with the red band are nice.

Re: How many outboards do you own?

I'm rather partial to the red banders myself. I've got the 4, 9.8, 20, 35 and 50 in the stable as it is. The 9.8 is nearly as clean as your 20...

1981 Jonhson 9.9 = mint, was backup to bigger boat
1997 Force 15 hp = the devil made me do it ... lol

Re: How many outboards do you own?

Hi - I'm new here. My new hobby of one year is fixing outboards. I have yet to get a boat but have 16 smallish engines (2hp-15hp, plus two 35s, and one 115) in my garage - all needing repair. Have worked on quite a few now and have sold on maybe four that I have fixed - can't say I made much money though as the pars cost a fair bit. Mine are mostly Evinrude/Johnson - all are more than 20 years old. Some are probably beyond redemption but are good for spares - even nuts and bolts are expensive these days so I canibalised one duff motor for all I could.

Re: How many outboards do you own?

Counting parts in bins, which could be used to build up a running motor - about 12. I just picked up another 1972 Johnson 65hp for $150. It has shifting problems, which at first glance seem to be related to the shift switch. Since I have another control unit for this motor, with a working shift switch, this one may turn out to be a "runner!"

Hmmmmmmmmmmm ..... I wonder how fast the 18 ft Glassmaster would go with two 65hp Jonnys on it?

Can you ever have enough outboard motors? :D
