Mid-80s Yamaha 90 question

I know that the larger '80s and early '90s Yamaha outboard had problems with steel shift shafts rusting, but I was wondering if the smaller motors had the same issue? I've found a local '85 Yamaha 90 that would be a better fit for my 17 Mako than the 115 Merc that it came with, but I'm not going to pursue it if the motor has the same problematic steel shift shaft and it hasn't already been replaced.

Just curious what the fix is? What problems does it cause? Do you mind telling me how much you were looking to pay for the Yamaha 90? I have a old Glasspar that I want to re-power and was thinking of the Yamaha. I think it would be perfect. I had a Yamaha 130 for years that was awesome. Thanks
