You are right, the cover has to come off. Get a gasket, you will ruin the old one. I like it better when there is a small lid over the thermostat too, but this is the way they made it. This cover doesnt have to come off often, though. Clean the cooling passages while you are in there, if something is in there. Usually there are no problems. One of the most reliable motors, b.t.w. I really like running them and working on them. Lots of torque for its horsepower.
Be a little carefull with the bolts, and you wont break any, even on a salt water motor.

Thanks G Dane, appreciate the reply.

All the bolts have rusted heads, hopefully I can get them off easily, then let them sit in spray oil to get the rust off..
