Hello
I am brand New to this forum, and for that matter Brand New to owning a boat. I Bought a Mercury 7.5 HP Outboard Motor for my Fishing boat. It Needed a water Pump as it's previous Owner told me. I dropped The Lower drive and Installed a Water Pump. It Pumps fine and but will Not come out of Forward gear or go onto Neutral or reverse when I change the Gear selector it feels like it is changing, but it is still stuck in the forward Position. How can I fix this Problem so I can start it in neutral and have reverse as my Girls are sick of Taking off abruptly as it has to be in start to get the motor started and it Takes off real fast as soon as it starts in the forward Gear ? Thanks to any replies as well, I really would appreciate your help here. ;) Regards, Hammerdwow-7

You need to drop the unit down and put it and the gear selector in rev. gear then relnstall it.

Hello Laddies
I really appreciate your insight on this problem.:) It was a real hassle getting that Unit to go back in place after I replaced the Water Pump. I am not Looking forward to this Job. Any Pointers to make this process a little less Hassle ? I am really brand new at this, and I Know I will have to pull The Four Bolts that hold the Lower unit in place to drop it again. Once I have done that and Pulled The Lower unit off, do I have to just make sure the shifter is in reverse before reassembling it ? How would I Put the Lower Unit in Reverse while it is off ? If there is another trick or something else I have to do to make this Motor shift right again, I would really appreciate you sharing it with me.Thanks, Hammerdown-7

What gear is it in now?? Once you drop the leg, just put the gear selector in that position and put it back together. If in doubt, get a manual, or you can always go to your local library.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Hello Rob
It is in Forward gear. I can Move the Gear shift on the side of the Motor but it will do nothing but stay in Forward gear. Thanks, Hammerdown.. Kurt

Is it just indexed incorrectly or did you jam somehow when you put it back together? If it is indexed incorrectly doing like I said will fix it.

Have a great day,

Rob.

You must put it in rev. When the prop shaft will turn the driveshaft when rotated clockwise it's in rev. when shift the engine into rev. and assemble

Hello Laddies & Robj
I want to thank Both of you for Helping me with this shifting Problem. I removed the Lower unit and made sure it was in a Forward gear location, reasembled it and it worked like a Champ. I ran the Motor and it Now shifts fine.;) I know it is not much of a boat, but it is one that I can Take my wife fishing on and have few problems with. Here is how it came out after I painted it inside & Out and went through the complete package. We Plan on Taking it out on the lake Saturday to fish and I owe a Big Thanks to Both of you. :) Regards, Hammerdown
