old smokey

my 175 hp 1987 merc outboard has been smoking alot at start up latley.

I have been putting in some cheap wally world oil. Is it true or myth that the expensive merc oil will smoke alot less?

how can I tell if the smoke is too much?

Forget the myth that WallyWorld oil is inferior quality, Jim. It is less expensive because of lower overhead, advertizing and marketing cost.

Synthetic oil of any brand will smoke less than petro oil of any brand.

Do you run the carbs dry when you pull out? That will pump oil into the engine when there is no gas going in. That will cause a lot of smoke on start-up.

I use wallyworld oil too and seem to be ok. Dont seem to have alot of smoke but do have some smoke when starting. I have an 1984 150 mercury. Just an suggestion make sure the oil and fuel mix is right...too much oil can cause alot smoke....seen it happen before.

how do I check the oil fuel mixture correclty? what part is suspect?

I think that maybe it is the hard starting in the cold morning that is giving me trouble. I am opening the throttle to about 50% in N and cranking for a while before it fires. could the cranking with throttle that far open be pumping in too much oil thus the smoke?

I know this may sound stupid but can some one run me through the steps of starting this old carb motor? It is a bit tough at first start up in the morning when its cold. even harder if the boat has not run in week.
after that the rest of the day it fires up with just a bump of the key.
