I have a 1986 Bayliner Capri with a Volvo 275 outdrive it has the volvo 2.3L engine. I have a coulpe problems first off when I make a hard left turn it seems to cavitate the engine revs up real high but the boat nearly stops. Secondly when I am bymyself or only have 1 passenger it runs just fine but if i put more than that in or try to pull a tuber or a skier it bogs down really bad. It runs between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm WOT with a 14X19 prop. Please help i am out of ideas.

Welcome!!

Is the prop is good shape or worn quite a bit? Are you sure about the rpm?

Not an expert but that max rpm is screwy.Either your tach is off or your prop is damaged or worn.Speaking generically typical max rpm would be around 4,600. If the bottom is clean and nothing to disrupt the flow near the prop I would suspect the prop. Would be helpful to have your max speed.

The prop is a little rough around the edges. That is the RPM that it reads on the tach but i guess it could be out of calibration. As for the max speed it says it runs about 25 at WOT. Thanks

The RPM has allways been the same. I had to put a new prop on it a coulple of years ago even when it was new and un damaged it ran about the same. Thanks Brad

Look at the back of the tach and make sure it's set for a 4 cylinder 4 stroke. If I remeber right, that's a Ford motor - maybe not - and I know they would wind up pretty good but that outdrive won't take that rpm long.

That motor has allways run those RPMs with that outdrive and had no problems and I have had the boat for 6 years as for the motor it is stamped VOLVO all over it I will have to check on that tach tommarrow hopefully it will be a little warmer still cold up here :( in Ohio.
Thanks Brad

Ok so I lied I just went out to the garage and pulled that tach and there was not a switch on the back of it all that it had on it was a little set screw for adjustment. So is there a test tach you can get or something like that to calibrate it??

25mph at 5,500 19 pitch sounds screwy to me.Of course the pitot speedo is not to accurate. What size is your boat?
It is possible if its truly a Volvo it might run higher rpm than the typical Mercruiser 4 cylinder. But I would have to wonder if it could hold up with a steady diet of 6,000 rpm.I don't think any of the American 4s are 2.3. but thats outside my experience.Volvo does run American 8s I think. But perhaps their own on the smaller stuff.

I have almost the same boat, and I am surprised at the high rpms you are
stating. Although the prop will make a difference in speed, as I found out,
there are other things to consider. The Volvo 4 is basically a car engine with
points in it that need to be clean and gapped, as well as the timing set.
I would suggest a basic tune-up for the engine to make sure everything is
working at its optimum best. It's worth it for this engine, as the power is
sufficient for cruising and pulling a skier, and you get fantastic gas mileage.

Aside from that 2 cents of info, I can offer my experience with the prop.
With the 14 x 19, I felt that the engine was very responsive, but that the
speed was not high enough. I was getting about 32mph. I went to a 14 x 21,
and that made a big difference for the better. I get better take-off and power
for pulling up a skier, and at the top I am getting about 36mph and this is around 4k rpm.
Gas mileage is still fantastic. This increase in overall performance kind of defies statistics
about how props are supposed to work, and I think it is so great only because
the engine is tuned and running at its best to get the maximum benefit from
the 14 x 21 prop.

Only other thing I'll mention is that I don't think the Capri is designed to be a
sports car type boat, and that it was designed to be primarily a cruiser.
My Capri has something right on the hull about it being "2 stage" for takeoff.

There are plenty of real experts on this forum who offer great advice and are willing to
help anybody, but there is also some bias (competition, maybe envy) against Bayliners.
There is another forum for Bayliner owners you can check out at:
http://baylinerownersclub.org/forum/

I think the Capri is a great combination of boat and motor, and take good care of it.
Happy boating!

Dhadley I am not quite sure what u mean and mick thanks for the advice I will check out the bayliner site. A buddy of mine is an Engineer and he is going to check my tach for me when the weather breaks and I can get to the lake to give it a good run. Oh and my Bayliner is 20ft long. Thanks

The long hub depth to the end of the shaft is 5.375".

The short hub depth to the end of the shaft is 4.705".

There is not much difference, so measure your prop hub carefully.
Your prop should have a number with 6 digits on it. Use that number for
a cross reference or match. Volvo Penta web site has some info.

Another thing for you to evaluate is whether or not your hub is slipping.
If you have hit rocks, tree stumps, or anything, that is another possibility.
If there are dings, you can have the prop rebuilt, but make sure that the
shop can also check and change the hub if it is slipping. Many posts on this,
so try some searches for more info.

The brand of a new prop is not that important as getting a good prop.
They are sold on iboats.com as well as elsewhere. Prices mostly the same.

Good luck!

I have an 86 2850 Bay 275 volvo twins.

Your hub is likely spun.
one way to see if it is take off the prop and mark the hub and prop.
put back on and run it Take back off if the marks dont line up you
have a spun hub
