Re: heavy oxidation

you can get the oxidation off....however i think the only way to make the pink red is to paint it......unfortunatly red fades in the sun.

Re: heavy oxidation

Try this link, no UGA fan can have a pink boat......its against the UGA rules! Go VOLS? Man your crazy.......you could get shot for saying that on a UGA thread...ha ha...just kidding mods! I had some oxidation on my boat(mine was white) and I used this and now the boat looks new again, I did have to buy a buffer but I picked one up from Northern Tool at a killer price.

If your near cartersville or Kennesaw your more than welcome to use my buffer to turn(attempt) your pink boat back to red. I had a runabout boat that was painted and swore I would never own another, some have good experience with them but I just didn't like it. It might have been the paint job that was done to mine but it didn't seem to hold up well after years and use. Good luck lets us know how it turns out!

Re: heavy oxidation

Wax-on, Wax-off as already said, BUT you must first use rubbing/polishing compound grasshopper! Then the wax. If you try the wax first, the oxidation will turn the wax to well, dried wax, and then you'll have to really work your butt off getting the useless wax off with polishing compound. Learned this earlier this week on my heavily oxidized aluminum hull. If your boat is glass, try a little wax first then decide. Even so, will probably shine up better if you compound it, wax it and then buff. Red is a hard color to keep.

Re: heavy oxidation

pic would help...any metalflake?

with red that's pink now, i'd just start with wet sanding. if you can't get rid of the haze that way, its too deep.

wax and other miracle products will fill the cracks for a little while but they will dry out and really make the problem worse like tmcalavy said. they'll attract more dirt and dust into the tiny surface cracks and abrasions since the cracks will fill up with whatever product is used.

you want to remove the outer layer(s) of damaged gel coat to get to a smooth surface.

Re: heavy oxidation

I have been working on my 1972 Glassmaster with the same problem as yours. It had heavy oxidation and looked to me as if it would polish out a green color. After polishing it out it turned back brown. I used 3M heavy oxidation compound & wax and it is turning out better than I had expected. Of course it is a 30+ year old boat so my expectations were not that high in the first place. I will post a pic of what it looked like before I started and will post a pic tomorrow of how it looks so far. Bottom line with a little time with a polisher I think you will be happy

Re: heavy oxidation

I hope the pics give you an idea of what a little polishing will do. Like I said before it is a 30+ year old boat so I didn?t put to much effort in it to get where I am now. If you need any help let me know.

Yes its a gel coat & 5 yrs of waxing (lol) makes it look awesome but it suckes the wax up in mins & fades back out.

Re: heavy oxidation

My pink (red) and white 20' Chaparral looked just like yours, I use the meguires oxidation remover like in the link above and brought back that deep red color, it was alot of work work work in fact I burnt out a 7" variable speed buffer purchased from Summit Racing (vector Brand) I used it hard every evening after work for about a week, I had to work about 1 square foot at a time but the effort payed off. I wish I had taken before and after shots.

Re: heavy oxidation

I might add i have wet sanded it but ill never get the original red back unless i get a new gel coat or just break down & paint it which i heard doesnt last long on the fiberglass boats.

Re: heavy oxidation

Okay im going to post two pics, one is what the boat looks like after a week of waxing & the other is after it sits in the sun for a week. Just seems like the wax job would last longer than just a few days to a week even tho its in the sun. :(

Re: heavy oxidation

wax temporarily covers up oxidation. if you don't compound or wet sand all of the bad layer of gel coat off, the oxidation comes back quick because it wasn't ever really gone. and, without getting it out of the sun, it will start fading again.

you mentioned that you wet sanded....what grits?

Re: heavy oxidation

you can compound it but it will most likely take more work than wet sanding. the gel won't know the difference. red fades more than other colors usually.

you'd need a real buffer to compound, NOT a random orbital type. since you're using power equipment, there's probably a higher chance of damaging the gel than by wet sanding. but, either way, you have to be asleep at the wheel or out of gel coat to really do any damage.

it's a fairly labor intensive project when they get like that. don't skimp on wax when you're done and your arms are rubber.

paint isn't a bad option but you still have to do all of the prep. i'd go with wet sanding personally.
