On my 35 HP evinrude 1959, do I need the muffs to test run the motor or do I have to put it in a barrel of water?

Depends on the test. A flushette (muffs) is usually satisfactory. However, if the test pertains to the water pump, a barrel or trash can would be preferable.

my 59' 35hp will take about 20-30 seconds to start spitting water so give it a little time. seems like forever when you're not sure if its pumping.

Re: how to test

Some people claim they are successful using the rubber cup muffs, but I don't see how. The water intake is the screen on the forward edge of the exhaust snout above the prop. There was a Tempo Flushette made to fit, but they are getting pretty rare. Use a barrel.

agree used a barrel, leg needs to be submerged 1/2 way up. water pump has to be under water, it is not self priming.
