Applying Registration numbers

I have a new boat(Monark 185 King deep-v alum). Any tips to getting the registration numbers on straight without drawing a line on the hull with a pencil. Neither my wife nor I are very detailed people so usually when we have something like this is looks like a 3rd grader did it. I would like this to look straight.

Thanks.

Use masking tape for a reference at the bottom of the letters, stand back and make sure it looks straight first, then start applying letters

Good idea. Thanks. Sometimes I think too hard and don't see the simple answer.

Might want to pick a tape that isn't too sticky, like different models from 3M.

Use a lazer level.

Or, yeah, a lil tape. Sometimes simple things are better. Spray the back of the tape with WD 40 or something. Just tack it up.

Of course you could probably use the pencil..and then an eraser.

Look around the internet for registration numbers that come as a single decal. I ordered some (can't remember where from, it was a long time ago), and you can personalize the font and color to match your boat. Wasn't very expensive, and it comes in one piece, so no worries about alignment.

The advantage is that you can see it from a distance. You really need to view it from 15 or 20 yards out to determine if it looks straight in relation to the lines of the boat.
