Re: General Boat Maintenance

All you told us is that you have 21 foot Grady White. Knowing what engine, outdrive, and year would certainly help. But buying a service manual for your engine and drive would answer all of your questions.

It someone hasn't already done so replace every thru hull on the boat. I can guarantee you if it hasn't been done already that you can walk around with a screw drive and crack every one of them with ease.

The first thing I did on all of mine was to replace the TH with SS and installed all new rubber throughout, especially the scupper hoses. I currently have a 1998 226 and even at that age the wires in the scupper hose had been to rust.

If the gas tank hasn?t been replace you might want to consider that as well. The aluminum tanks start showing there age around the age of 10 and should be inspected at least once a year once they get that age.

I had a 1986 204C where the tank looked good until I pulled it for inspection and found corrosion on the bottom that was just starting to seep fuel. Had it given way I would have had 62 gallons of fuel in the bilge.

I don?t mean to scare you but I?ve rebuilt a number of these boats and they all have the same issues. They are good, high quality and very seaworthy boats but after 26 years a craft needs some TLC now and then. Heck, even my 1998 needed some TLC when I got it.
