Hi all boaters, im new to this forum, ive tried searching through previous topics but couldnt find an anwser to my problem.

I have a 1994 mercury outboard 200 2 stroke and im having a really hard time starting the motor. The only way I can get it to start is spraying engine starter fluid into the carburator. After I spray the motor it starts up right away. But the next morning I have the same problem again. I can't get the motor to start without spraying the fluid in the carburator.

im not sure what the problem is, i changed the fuel filter and the water seperator. I don't think the spark plugs could be the problem.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Nick

You need to figure out how to choke the engine. If you are talking about a 200hp Mer, then there is a key switch you use to start it, push in on the, this is the choke amd hold it 4-5 seconds then turn to start. There is also an enrichner valve loctated on the starboard side, kind of behind the carbs, there is a little button on top on it, push down on the button and you should hear a click, this also chokes/sprays fuel into the carbs.
If you keep spraying starting fluid in the carbs you are going to score the cylinders, then you will have a big repair bill ahead.

Find the enrichment valve and make sure the valve has fuel to it and then have someone hold the key in and make sure it has fuel flowing through it to the engine. It may not be working or it may have pinched line

Thanks for the advice guys but im not really that good with fixing stuff and i tried looking for the enrichment valve with no luck. I ordered a manual to help me find it but that won't be for a couple a days i presume. That bulb thing I squeeze before starting the motor, does that spray fuel into the carbs??

thanks again guys, as you can tell im pretty stupid mechanically.

ps. after checkin the boat again I realized that one of my two batteries is dead. I usually put the switch to "all" so i never realized it but do you think that 1 dead battery could be the culprit?

Heres's the process:

If you have power tilt & trim, tilt the engine down.
Squeeze the primer bulb until firm
Raise the fast idle lever
Turn the key to RUN (not start) and then push it in and hold for a count of 8 or 10. (Pushing the key in activates the primer solenoid which allows fuel to pass directly into the engine). This is a rather controversial procedure so if you don't believe it works, you can just push the key in and hold it while cranking the engine. When it fires let go.
Turn the key to start.
When the engine fires, lower the fast idle lever so the engine runs at 1000 -1200 rpm for a minute or so.
If the engine tends to die push the key in momentarily again. You may have to do that twice during the initial warm up.
Lower the fast idle lever all the way and drive away.

Oh yes -- stop using ether to start the engine. The engine doesn't like that.
