5hp tn 27 johnson, been running rough did all the usual, coils points new float etc, checked the fuel flow from tank and I thought it was minimal. removed tank and petcock, inside tank fitting is a brass fuel filter attached to fitting. I cleaned this etc reinstalled still minimal fuel flow. I ended up drilling one small hole into brass fuel filter to enchance flow. At least now engine does not stall as before but still runs better between start and fast on the lever then at fast only. I was wondering if anyone else had this issue.

That was a common problem with those sintered filters. They are nearly impossible to clean. Replace it is the only way. Or, take it out and rig up some other sort of filter. I suggest removing the sintered part from the fitting and solder in a piece of brass filter screen.

Yeah, the internal tank filter on my '62 3 horse was plugged up. I tried carb cleaner (a half a can) and soaking it....

Finally, I just took it off using a propane torch to heat the solder joint to the shutoff. Yes, I did remove the needle from the valve first.

I put a disposable inline filter on it, all is well.
