Hi Folks,
Have the 50hp engine stripped ready for painting, primer will be a zinc chromate, followed by a topcoat of evinrude blue xp.
I know finish will be dependant on prep & number of coats, but roughly how many primer & topcoats would you reccommend(trying to gauge the number of tins I,ll need of each).
Also, is it necessary or reccommended to use a clear laquer over the lot???
Thanks,
DAVY

Re: paint spraying

I'd be very careful to use VERY thin coats of zinc primer, with at least 15min. between each one. Probably 3 coats will be enough. 2 coats of paint should do. Myself, I like a coat of clear on all my stuff. Makes it shine and protects from gas/oil.
JMO, I've only painted a couple.

Agree with JBJ,the clear coat does wonders.Use a very, very thin coat of the chromate. The Tempo brand primer i use says only one coat.I would read the label.

Re: paint spraying

make sure you wear a respirator!! that zinc chromate is really bad for you. i'm my squadrons respirator protection program mgr and they made it pretty clear that that stuff will kill ya. i've painted for years and i'll tell ya, two even coats of primer, six of top and tons of clear!!!!!!!
