Hi...
I was woundering what would cause water to gush from the exhaust ports on a rebuilt 1980 70hp, I have a few leaks on the exhaust box gaskets but it is coming out like a hose pipe of the exhaust , I am going to pull the covers and re-seal them but is there anything else i should check which could cause so much water to come out?

Thanks in advance

tashasdaddy...
Thanks for the reply its coming out of the two round exhaust ports at the top of the transom ,but not just a little bit its pouring out like a tap out of both ports  I think it must be passing inside the exhaust box somewhere ?

you should have a good pee stream, out of the starboard rear cowling. the area mark in red below, is the exhaust relief ports, for when the motor is idling in the water. OK to have splashes of water there, if it is gushing, something is wrong, as most of the water and exhaust mixes in the exhaust housing, and comes out the center of the prop Yellow mark. if you have something else happening, could be a blockage.

Water water everywhere evinrude 70 flood

Water water everywhere evinrude 70 flood

Hi again...
I have uploaded a video ( bit poor qaulity sorry ) of the water coming from the exhaust ports on my 1980 evinrude 70hp here....

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lTEnVQ8j_oc

I have re-sealed the exhaust box gaskets no problems there, checked the thermostat seal is fine the only thing I am not sure about is the follwoing...

1. The pee tube had been replaced at some point and was approx half the correct size could this cause the relief valve to pass? now replaced but not tried yet .

2. there are two relief poppet valves and springs , the valves have rubber washers on and currently seat straight onto the aluminium below should there be a rubber seal or bush they sit against as the drawing shows some sort of grommet ?

The water does not gush out straight away only after about 7-8 seconds , the pee tube works from the off .

Any help will be very very welcome.

Thanks
bob

Just for drill, pull the lower unit off and look UP

Is there a big ole wasp nest pluging the exhaust passage?

My 70 evin does this, but it is because I dont have a thermostat and the water blows straight through. Sounds like your thermostat or relief valves are open somehow.

Re: Water flooding from evinrude 70 exhaust

Thanks for the help...
I have pulled the bottom unit all is fine not blockage however I did notice that the water pump was not sealing against the cooling feed pipe up to the block , Interesting how you mentioned re the water coming out without the stat , I need to run it again and have a mess with the bypass valves again as the two exhaust ports are the first point of exit for the water coming from that point .

Many thanks

Sorted now thanks for the help , turned out that the connection form the water pump to the water pipe leading to the block was no good and flooding the transom which then came out at the ports .
