I am a rookie with outboards, so this may be a dumb question. I have a water circulation problem (I think). I replaced the entire pump housing and Impellor assy. In the driveway hooked to the hose, I only get dribbles of water coming out of the pee holes at idle. I also see steam coming out. It does not "spit" out as I have seen in pictures. Is this normal? do I have a stuck TS?

Welcome to IBOATS.

Steam is not a good thing.

the 85hp it is sometimes hard to get the tubes to line up on the grommets, you may not be pumping to much water into the powerhead.

Need to run the engine in a barrel to see how the pump is working, water hose forces pressure into the pump and cant tell if the pump is working or not.

when you pulld the lu did you flush the system? Stick the water hose on the right side tube and run water throughout the systemto getany crud out of it.

That motor does not have a tell tale, unless one has been retrofitted. Has it?

The exhaust relief will get a mist of water out of it. Was it pumping prior to the water pump rebuild? Were the t stats changed?

As stated, if you are running on muffs and cooling water is not properly reaching the head, you have a water restriction in the cooling circuit which will need to be flushed.

I have a 1970 and a 1972 85 hp motors, neither have a pee hole, although I plan on making one. Anyway I did the impeller on the 72 and those water tubes are kinda of tricky to line up.

are you talking about the little water discharge holes on the bottom of the lower unit?

lining up the tubes, mine has these little plastic tubes that you insert into the pump housing first, and they help to guide the metal tubes down into the assy. I did try putting the hose directly on the tubes going up and flushing the whole thing. The tubes going up seem to wiggle a little like they are loose on the top end, is that normal? The water escaping from the seam and small vent holes where the lower matches up to the lower leg also sprays out like it is under pressure, not sure if that is from the hose, or from the pump. One thing though is that the escaping water gets warm/hot as the motor heats up. sooooo it seems like the water is going up to the motor, but is not all going out the exaust? even if the exaust gasket is not sealing correctly to the lower, I would think that it would only seep into the rest of the lower, not escape under pressure like it is doing.
