New boat came with electronics....but they're shot. Trashing the current gps and "fishfinder". Only thing working well is the vhf radio.

So...starting from there...what would you buy (and why, if possible)

Boat is 25' walkaround to be used in ocean for trolling and bottom fishing in Florida.

Re: what 2 look 4 in electronics

About 9 years ago I purchased a Garmin 185 Chartplotter with integral sounder/fishfinder. I can't comment about any other brands either good or bad, but I can say that my Garmin had been one of the bust purchases I've ever made. What a great little unit. If and when it goes out I'll be on line looking for another Garmin. :) I would imagine, however, that there are probably some other good brands out there besides Garmin.

It depends on how MUCH money you want to spend as you can go between 1000 and 10000 dollars pretty easy

What GPS and what SONAR do you have that are "trashed"? It is a lot less expensive to get them fixed than to buy new stuff, assuming that you aren't just rationalizing getting new stuff.

I believe Garmin are the best GPS and Lowrance/Eagle are the best fresh water SONAR. For salt water I would go with Furuno SONAR.

The fishfinder / depth gauge is humminbird (don't know the model number as I'm @ work)
The GPS is Eagle

They're pretty much both shot. depth mostly reads 984 and occasionally shows something different. Both screens have so many vertical blank lines in them they can barely be read.

Since I don't know about this type of equipment...let's say I had a budget of 3,000 to spend. What features are vital? I thought I read something about some kind of equipment also hooking into the vhf radio. Is that correct, or am I not remembering right?

Re: what 2 look 4 in electronics

My 1981 Lowrance depth finder still works like brand new and it has features that are no longer on the newer menu driven units. I also have a Furuno 1981 Loran C and works perfect and even thou I also now have a Garmin GPS and a Lowrance GPS I still use the Loran C for 90 percent of my navigation.

I not a fan of hummingbird at all since in the past there were new unit failures every day. Since the matrix series came out they have been much better.

Old does not mean it bad

Eagle GPS is the same company as Lowrance, both have the same address. I would say Eagle is very good unit.

Vertical lines on the screen is usually not the unit but noise interfearance from some electrical iteam on the boat.

You can buy new units but a clean power line and proper noise supression may be all you need.

Start by trying the units with the motor off and all other electronics, blowers, pumps turned off. If it works good then start the motor and check then each electrical device. Check the unit after each new device is turned on.

Make sure your battery connection is clean and tight. All the power connectors are clean and not green. A ferrite bead on the power line can stop a lot of noise like from Spark Plugs.
Check to make sure you have at least 12.6 volts to the input of the units.

VHf is the one unit you likely do need to upgrade unless it is new.
Newer model VHF units have a DSC button and if you have the VHF hooked up correctly to a GPS unit it can send out your position and vessel information durning a MAYDAY distress call. It would brodcast on channel 70.
Hitting the DSC Red button will send out your vessel information and position for Coast Guard and other Vessels to recieve. You must also have a free MMSI number for it to work.

The DSC in still pretty new (Less than 5 years) and the Coast Guard in many location is still not monitoring it.

Buying a new GPS and Depthfinder is not a quick thing to do in my opinion.
How and where you use your boat and electronic can make one unit worthless and another like Gold Bars.
If Your going to buy new make a list of what you want each unit to do.

Example Depthfinder needs to work down to 500 feet of saltwater and see small fish on the bottom, This would mean you need a high power unit with large screen and high vertical resoultion and at least 4 times bottom expantion and dual frequency with narrow cone angles.

Maybe you would say I never fish more than 40 feet deep in fresh water.
In this case you can get buy with a small screen, low resoultion and do not even need bottom zoom

Kind of like buying a new vehical, it could be a ford pinto or a truck that can tow a 12,000 pound boat in the hills.

With the advent of digital HD sounder technology the old analog units just doesn?t cut it anymore.

Raymarine, Furuno are the leaders in this technology but Lowrance just released their ?broadband? sounder and Garmin released the GSD22 which is a 2kW black box sounder so you might want to take a look at those as well.

Wow, that is one helluva unit. The only advice I can tell ya is to go to a store that have one on display and check it out. Play with it and see how fast it actually does thing. It might be capable of doing lot of fancy things but how fast it does it is what important.

Re: what 2 look 4 in electronics

A question for those more experienced and spec savvy than I.....

What do you think of this? Price is 2,700

That's a pretty good price for a great unit.

I have a GPSMAP 4208 but would have gotten the 4212 had it fit into the electronics cabinet at the helm. It’s a NMEA 2000 unit so you can add a multitude of functionally just by plugging in the modules. I run a seperate Furuno finder but added the fuel function and radar to my unit.

If you want to get fancy you can get the remote control unit for that unit. May sound like a gimmick but you'll use it more than you think. Or........you could take it up a level and bump up to the 5XXX series and get the touch screen option.

If you get it make sure and update the SW. Garmin updated the software back in February and added a lot of additional functionally to the unit.
