low depth alarm

A friend of mine has a 26 foot express cruiser ( I'm not sure of the make) and told me that his depth/fish finder has a low water alarm that he can set. My 2004 SeaRay Sundancer has a depth guage reader in the dash and I have a Garmin 188cGPS with a depth/fish/finder. I haven't gone through the maunals yet, but does anyone know if my Garmin or SeaRay unit would have that capability?
Thanks,
RK

Don't know about the boat unit, but I'm sure the GPS unit would have one.

Set it a little deeper than you think you need. Better to have a little more warning even if it mean it sound off a little more.

My boat has a 3.5 foot draft. What setting would you suggest?

Unless you going dead slow i have never seen it to be as usefull as the chartploter (GPS) or paper chart

At speed the boat is going towards the shallow spot to fast IMHP

Re: low depth alarm

I set mine at 10'. Most of the channels around here are dredged to 20-40'. When under way, I look at my depth gauge at least every 15-30 seconds because it is not necessarily your current depth, but how fast it is changing. For example, when I get into 10' I know I'm out of the channel and will double check my position. At 6', I will start backing out of the throttle. At 4' I will come off plane and trim up a little. At 1', I grab the push pole and get the wife to work. Keep in mind that this is an example and is very relative to your own boating enviroment. There are people who boat safely at WOT in 5' of water all the time because they know the water well and are aware of its uniform depth. There is a lake about 2 hours from me where near the dam, the depth goes from 120' to 4' in a matter of feet. There is nothing you can do about situations like that other than know the water you are in. It is a literal cliff from where they made the lake decades ago. The locals know about it. I didn't and it was marked with a highly functional 2 liter Pepsi bottle. Scared the crap outta me!

I have a Garmin 185 Chartplotter/Sounder and it has a depth alarm. I've set it a few times before. I don't recall exactly but I imagine you probably just go to the Sounder page and press menu. Then scratch around a bit and you'll find it. Note that if it is a combo unit there is probably an "anchor dragging" alarm on it as well.

Even though your depth gauge shows say 10 ft or what ever dont forget about objects.Rare I guess but still.

I was putting around on our local lake last year(idle speed nearly) exploring a little cove, depth guage showing 9-10 ft,glance over to my side and see something roundish, stop and it turns out to be a upside sunken pontoon, about 2 ft below the water surface, realized the depth gauge is just a suggestion.........

Re: low depth alarm

In a river I run in has a vertical rock about a foot in diameter. It is way up river, I am always going slowly, the river is the color of tea with about 4 inches of visiblilty. An alarm wouldn't help. I hit it on my way down river every now & then. My boats draft is about 15 inches off plane, but I have my alarm set at 5 feet. As has been mentioned, also pay attention to how fast the bottom is rsing.

It all depends where you run your boat. Mine I run in Inland lakes. My drafty is 32 inches I set mine at 5 ft . That gives me time to slow down (I hope) and get the outdrive up or change my course before striking a sandbar or running aground. At 38-42 MPH you don't have much time to react so you must know your course, you must know the water your boating in and watch and exercise caution very carefully. Of course at slower speed you have more time to react and sometimes the alarm just serves as an attention getter.

I have a Garmin too but I have never even used the depth alarm. I am not good with technical stuff, and is it just me or do they make it hard to use those GPS units?
