Hi there,
well I guess its time to pick you peoples brain again.
My motor just does not seem to wanna idle. I checked the carbs and cleaned/rebuilt them. To my surprise there wasn`t even any build up and all the jets seemed open.
Now my question is what else influences the idle ?? Everytime I want to put the motor in gear it dies. So I have to rev it up in nutral and then push it in gear in order for it not to die. Everything else runs fine.
Any suggestions ???

you may need to do a link n sinc. but in the picture below, the bolt at the very top is the idle speed screw, (suppose to have rubber tip). turning it clockwise increases the idle speed. you motor should idle 650-750 rpms, with the motor in the water and in gear. it will idle a little higher in neutral. you can not set this on muffs in the drive way, you can get close, but fine tune in the water.

Ok, thanks, I will try that.
Just one more quick question, when you rebuild a carburator, the only things that came in the kit were the gaskets, a few o-rings, float, needle and seat. After replacing all that, is that all there is to it ?? Yes I know you have to set the float, and I did that. With the Carburator inverted the float has to sit straight, right ??

Thanks, Markus

Yes, I did. I removed everyone of them and cleaned `em with carb cleaner. They all looked great.

Re: 1986 Johnson 90 hp Idle question

Ok, took another look at the carbs yesterday and still couldn`t find anything wrong. Put them back on and tried to run the engine on muffs. The only way it will stay running is if I rev the engine up to about 1000-1100 rpms in nutral.
Any other suggestions on what to look for ?? Oh yeah, the idle screw is all the way in (highest setting).

Thanks, Markus

I was afraid you`d say that. Sparks are good on all 4 and compression runs at 120-115 on all 4 cylinders. How hard is the lync`n`sync ?? I`ve looked it up in my manual, but it didn`t make much sense to me. Is there another way to check the timing other then a test tank and one of those balancer wheels ??
