Motorguide Brute 756 questions

I just purchased a used Motorguide Brute 756 and was wondering if anyone knows when they stopped manufacturing this model. Also, before mounting the motor to my boat I put it through a dry run using a single 12v battery and it seems to be running slower than I would have expected for 56# thrust. It has the 12/24 V option and the wiring configuration on a single battery is fairly simple so it shouldn't be the battery or the wiring causing the problem. The motor runs and all 5 speeds are working, but when I compare it to an old Minkota Endura (30# thrust) that I just sold its seems as though the Endura had a much higher RPM when the throttle was maxed. Any suggestions would be helpful.

The reason it seems to run slow is because its a 24 volt motor running on half its power. Run the old 12V on 6 volts and you'll have the same effect. You say the wiring is straight forward -- but how exactly do you have it wired. If you have the red and black wires on the battery you have it wrong. It's the orange and black wires that provide 12V.

Thanks Silvertip and I agree that the orange and black wires are used to complete the 12 Volt system. I plan to run the motor on a 24 V system which will require the red wire as well, but with the 12 or 24 volt option shouldn't I technically be able to run the motor on a 12 volt battery and still get the same power, but with a reduced battery life? If not, does an electric trollling motor with a 12/24 option mean you must run 2-12 volt batteries regardless of the 12 or 24 volt setting? I was hoping to see a comment similiar to what you listed in your post so any other input you have would be helpful. Thanks again.

The most thrust you can get from any troller running on 12V is around 55#. To get any more than that you need 24V. Because you are running yours on 12V does not mean it has 55# of thrust. If it's a 72# motor on 24V for example, it might only be 36 - 40# on 12V.
