Have a 50 hp force Model 507y8d,1988. Was running great. Have two deep cycle batteries in a series(fairly new), both fully charged. All of a sudden boat won't even turn over, not even a click. Any ideas? Rectifier? Circiut breaker does not seem tripped. Any ideas would be very much appriciated.

... series? eek, 6 volts hopefully , otherwise you ran 24 V's thru it. parallel gets you same voltage, series doubles it. there is a fuse along the block in a red protected casing. check that out and your voltage. hopefully Frank or Silvertip will come along and chime in.

If you applied 24V to the starter circuit you will be lucky if all you did was blow the fuse.

Actually I meant parallel. Could it be the solenoid? How do I trouble shoot? My Clymers book seems to complicating. Like I said it won't even click when I turn the key.

I would first verify it is in neutral. There is a neutral interlock switch that provides power to the starting solenoid and will only work if the motor is in neutral or if the neutral switch is out of alignment will not work.

To test with the switch in the start position (this is the spring loaded position) there should be 12 volts from the small leg on the solenoid to ground.

Go to the Engine FAQs, rgrano. There are troubleshooting instructions in "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find.

connected the battery directly to starter, it works now. Engine turns and sounds great. Is this common? should I consider a rebuild?

Thanks for all your help all, this web-site has always helped when I need it...

No need to consider a rebuild, rgrano. Your problem is electric, not mechanical.

The starter runs when connected to the battery. Why did it not run through the correct circuit?
