Stall when in reverse

I have a 1972 Glassmaster tarpon with a mercruser 140. I finally got it to the lake for the first time yesterday. Off the ramp I noticed when I engaged it into reverse it was fine at idle, but when I tried to give it a little throttle it would shut off immediately. In forward it works fine. I think there is a switch to shut it off to keep you from being able to go full throttle in reverse. If this is true how do I adjust it to remedy the problem? Thanks.

No, there is no such switch....
So you are saying that if you are idling in reverse & try to accelerate it dies or when you put it in reverse & immediately try to accelerate it dies?.....
Either way it still has the symptom of a lower shift cable on its' way out.....
What position is the shift interrupt switch in when it quits?.....
(Check before shifting back to neutral)......
Better yet, let someone else do the shifting & observe the switch.....
It is probably hanging up due to a bad (going) bad cable.....;)
This means it is time for a bellows check/replacement as well....
(They both have approximately the same service life).......:)

Re: Stall when in reverse

Here is what happens. When I shift in reverse it does engage and will start moving. As soon as I try to give it any additional throtle it shuts down. In my forward gear when I give it throtle it works fine. I cant feel and extra tension in the lever from forward to reverse.

What happens when you hit the throttle in 'reverse' when in the 'throttle only' position ?.....

In the throttle only position it will idle up just fine in reverse or forward position without stalling out.

Bad lower shift cable.....
Again, have someone do the shifting & see what happens with the shift interrupter switch, my bet is that it is hanging up due to a bad cable....
The roller should recenter itself into the detent, in fact the swich movement is so fast, it is barely perceptible....;)

Thanks for the help. I will check it out this afternoon and see if that is what is going on with it.

Describe what you sprayed it on. Never fixed a sticking cable that way.

Re: Stall when in reverse

First I disconnected the cable to see if it would freely go forward and reverse. I moved without restriction so I figured it couldn?t be the cable itself but I sprayed it anyway. Then I sprayed the hinges it was mounted to and any hinged or moving part that I could find that it was connected to. I disconnected the throttle cable and moved it back and forth a few times until I could see the throttle cable moving without engaging the interrupt switch. I reconnected the throttle cable and started the engine and engaged it in reverse and throttled it up without another problem. After a couple of days I went to the lake without any problems. So im not sure which part I sprayed that made the difference or that all of it needed some cleaning and lubrication.
