Hey guys, ive got a 74 johnson 9.9 horse that ive had in the shop for awhile and im going to get it ready for the river. I put new coils on it and cleaned out the carb. I went to start it today and it fired up but idled rough. It seemed no matter where I put the low speed screw it was the same. When I had it at idle I put her in forward and it died right away. After then I could never get it started again. Anybody have any suggestions? Dutch

Hmm...Why was it in the shop? Did you replace the coils and clean the carb before or after you had it in the shop?
Not having any response to the mixture screws points to a carb blockage etc.
Give some more info...:) and a model #.

start at the basics, compression check, spark check. new fuel, clean filter. did you remove the low and high speed jets and clean them?

Ok, the motor wasnt in "the shop" thats just what I call my garage. I did a compression check and both cylinders have exactly 110 lbs. I did clean both jets and the entire carb. I have new gas in the tank and no filter. I think the low speed screw needs some new packing washers behind it, cause it feels a little loose. I just cant figure out why it died when I put it in forward. There is no model or serial # on the motor, someone took the plate off, but it did come with a 15 hp and the guy said he bought them both as a package deal from the dealer back in the 70's & Its tag says its a 74. I think I figured it out, the pivot pin that the float connects to is made out of plastic instead of steel and since it hasn't been run in 5+ years the plastic has swelled and it wont allow the float move up and down which would explain why either I have a ton of fuel coming out the carb or why I have no fuel to the carb sometimes. Do the carb kits you get from iboats come with this pin? Dutch
