Outdrive removal

All,

Alpha/MR Outdrive

I have a rotted transom on my I/O boat. I estimate about 1/2 of it is dry rotted and will be pulling the engine and outdrive assembly so I can replace all wood / glass on the transom. Engine removal is no problem, but I don't know what I am in for with the outdrive. I have the selco 3200 manual and have been reading a bit but it jumps around about 4 chapters for the removal.

If I remove the engine, what is involved in removing the outdrive? What special tools will I need? Any links with instructions for my situation?

Thanks

Re: Outdrive removal

The job is involved, but not terribly difficult.

To remove the outdrive, make sure the drive is in forward, then remove the six nuts holding it on - and the trim rams - then pull off the outdrive.

The transom assembly can then be removed. Again, it is basically as simple as disconnecting the various items on the inside - steering, wires, etc. All the bolts get removed from the inside. The bottom two are nuts and the bolts are made of aluminum - or some similar metal. Those bolts come off from the outside - after removing the nuts on the inside.

Just to add to Fishermark's explanation. You obviously need to have the engine out before you start removing the transom assembly.

Yeah, good thing to point out. In fact, here's the order of disassembly:

1. Remove outdrive.

2. Pull engine.

3. Remove transom assembly.

4. Fix transom.

5. Put it all back together in reverse order.

See? Easy!

Re: Outdrive removal

Great info guys. That doesn't seem diffiecult and I have lots of room to work. So are there any special tools required outside of the normal wrenchs, sockets and drivers? Doing the research, I see that I would need an engine allignment tool? Anything else?

I think it will take a 4-8 hours to get everything out, several days for glass work and cure and then a day to get everything back in.

I also heard about some sort of paint or sealer to apply to the bilge area when things like this are done. Do you have a name or a link?

Re: Outdrive removal

No one makes a manual for "How to remove the transom shield and put it back" so you might as well get used to going from chapter to chapter.
And Seloc will run you in circles and get you nowhere.
Unfortunately, you don't give a year about what this 3.0L might be. But here is some info that should be better than the Seloc junk.

Engine Removal

Outdrive and Transom Shield removal NOTE: For R/MR/and Alpha I drives.

Thanks! The stern drive link was the one I was looking for.

Re: Outdrive removal

Would this be the same for a pre alpha drive? I have removed the lower unit before, but this will be the year for the transom.
