I have an old lund runabout, back to back seats, full front deck, solid full windshield, 17' or so, had a 550 mer motor on it, I think from the 70's. Have been thinking about useing the hull for a boat rebuild project and was wondering if anyone would have any idea how a hull of this type would handle minnesota big water waves and how it would compare to the newer hull designs?

Re: Old Lund ID and hull design comparison?

I've had old and new boats on Mille Lacs in "bigger wave" situations. My Dad still has a '78 Sea Spite with a 115 on it. It's a tri-hull that seems to bob like a cork on any amount of waves out there. I've had water over the bow and it still held up to the pounding it took. My boat in my signature handles waves much better and slices through them instead of going over them. They handle differently but I feel safe in both.

Depending on what boat it is....you really need to give us more info....how wide is it at its widest point and at the transom?

In general, in the upper midwest, any old Lund is worth restoring. In general, if the hull looks like it is in good shape- no major damage, etc, and the transome looks solid, then you have a boat that is worth alot to the right person.

Lund built their reputation for being very durable on big lakes like Mille Lacs, Rainy, Lake of the Woods, etc....you still see tons of old Lunds and old Alumacrafts on the big waters in the upper midwest...

There have been alot of hull changes over the years on Lunds. But that doesn't mean that you don't have a great boat....
