When idling the boat in the driveway cold and on muffs I hear this very pronounced moaning coming from the engine. I can't isolate it to one particular spot but it goes away after the engine warms up.

I've already read all the jokes associated with this. Including that it is the tortured souls of previous 470 owners...hahaha.

I haven't found any posts anywhere where any one has ever found a solution. Lots of documented cases out ther (Means I am not crazy) but no one has ever figured it out.

Anyone here have any clue as to what this might be?

Took the boat out for her maiden voyage today. No moan or howl. I think this is intermittent or I didnt hear it because I had the hood on.

I did notice planing wasn't easy. With two people and my 12 year old she was under a load but she got on plane pretty easy. With a boat full we almost never got on plane. When planed I got 36 mph by gps with 5 adults and three kids.

I'm sure this is a prop problem. I need to have a half way decent hole shot for watersports. Would the fins that attatch to the foot help with planing?

Anyone have any ideas on the howling?

Without knowing what your WOT rpms are it's pointless to even think about props.

the moan is the oil pump, a lot make the same noise. pickup a prop with a smaller pitch to get better performance onto the plane for towing tubes skiers etc, be careful to manage your wide open throtle rpm with this prop installed.

Thanks guys. I know about RPM's and WOT. I mainly just wanted to run her today. I'm going to get the tach working this week. The prop on the boat is a 21 pitch best I can tell. There is a 19 that came with it. I plan on trying that one after fixing the tach.

Anything to worry about with the oil pump noise?

so was it easy to get on plane or not?

Its possible the noise you hear is the altanator charging the battery. Is kinda like a low whine, whistle sound...just another possibility.

With two people and my son it wasnt a problem.

I have the old charging system....no alternator.
