Hi, I just got this 18hp outboard recently from a local guy for $200.00. When I bought it he said it had an fine but hasn't been used in a while but should start and run. Anyway I changed the plugs and checked the comp. (120psi) after a few pulls it cranked up but only stayed running for about a minute and then sputtered out.Once running I reved it up a bit and tried adjusting the rich/lean knob but it still died out. Do you think running decarb thru the system will help to possibly break up any varnish inside? How do I check if it needs a carb rebuild? Otherwise looks like a nice motor seller also stated he had the head changed, impeller and fuel pump. I am going to get a manual for it as soon as I can. I was also looking for any opinions about this year 18hp motor, thanks.

Do it right - clean carb & install a rebuild kit.

Thanks for the replies, I figured thats what I had to do. It's probably just a case of stuck float.

Yep, clean the carb. I have several 18's and they're great engines but it sounds like you need a good de-gumming carb cleaning :)
