Having replaced the water pump in the outdrive I see the manual call s for filling the drive with oil from the bottom up.

Is it OK just to pour it in the top instead and wait for it to find its way into the lower drive and for the air to come out?

It is best to fill it from the bottom up so you don't have to worry about any air pockets and if there is any water or moisture it should be on top of the oil as you pump it up.

Hope this helps

PS...the pumps to do this aren't very expensive

Follow the manual.......Even then you may have a small air pocket or two. But why deviate from the manual???

Guess I should have mentioned that if you do find any moisture be sure to address it...means you have a leaking seal somewhere

Thanks for the replies.

I was enquiring as to the possibility of filling the drive from the top as I did not have a pump to hand. I have seen sense, acquired a pump and filled the outdrive from the bottom up.

A further question, if I may.

The manual said to fill the drive until oil came out of the top vent hole. This was all OK and I put in about 1.2 litres which is the stated capacity. On this boat (Year 2000 Bayliner 175), there is a small reservoir in the engine bay for outdrive oil. Should I keep pumping oil in with the top vent plug in until it appears in the reservoir or, having filled the drive to the top vent level, should I now simply add oil to the reservoir through the reservoir filler cap?

yes, once oil is flowing at the vent install the vent with new washer, REMOVE the resevoir bottle and clean the mud out of it if not done already, remove the resevoir cap and continue filling to the full line on the bottle.
if using the HP gearlube(recommended) then mud cleaning is an annual event :).

I've always pumped lube up into the reservoir bottle from the vent tube. Pump in from the bottom to the vent hole, then close up the bottom, move your pump to the vent hole and pump from there until you see lube filling up the reservoir. Then you can close up the vent and pour in to the reservoir bottle once you see the lube has started filling it from the bottom. If you pour in to an empty reservoir bottle you are still almost guaranteed air in the system.

That's the way I do it.
Works great with little mess/spillage.

Why bother moving to vent hole, just keep pumping from the bottom.
Less of a mess.
