Re: telltale pressure?

hey dawgs did you get the lower off, i dont know what it should be with a gauge .but you also need to check your thermos and poppett valve s
you should have a steady strong flow from your telltale .
and be able to keep your hand on each head for a few seconds.
the problem with water pumps is they may be pumping good now
but if they are dryrotted or burnt they will go out on the drop of the hat and
in my case by the time my buzzer whent off it cost me a cyl .
if you decide to run it for awhile .keep a good eye on the tale tell
or better yet put a water pressure gauge on so you can keep and eye on it.
my bad if thats what you are doing .i thought you may be checking the pressure with gauge then removeing.sorry i couldnt be more of help with the stuck lower .they are and can be a major pain,if there is a good outboard guy around your area you may be strait with him and tell him its stuck and see
what kind of price he throws you.my outboard guy told me to bring him mine
before i tried to remove it.and he would do it for 250 with new pump
i wish i would have . i almost gave up.
i would have put gauge on mine and ran it thru the summer but it was peeing real weak and my buzzer whent off at the lauch so i had no choice
good luck dawgs you will get it done

Re: telltale pressure?

no benny...lower unit wouldnt budge. maybe if i run it i can loosen it up. if i can find someone to replace it for me for 250 that would be great.....did you tell your mechanic it was stuck before or after he gave you that price?

Re: telltale pressure?

yes but most mechanics shy away from that stuff or try to hit you for some loot because they know what a apin it can be .my mechanic is the one that told me to string it up .if that didnt work he would cut off my lower to remove shaft .but lowers being as expensive as they are i couldnt afford that
i also tryed loosening the four bolts on the lower and leaving out the other
and putting a prop on it with two blades bent and running it at the launch
on my trailer .worse case you can cut lower off be carefull to save mid section,. call all of the boat guys in your area see what they want
this guy i use is old as hell mean as hell and about half the people that
use himm swear he is awfull .the other half love him. but he is resonable.
thats what you need pm me let me know how it goes .put a water pressure
gauge on it prmanent make sure you have decent pressure keep and eye on it
dont go offshore .and enjoy the summer as long as it has good pressure
and look for and outboard guy or just prepare to do whatever it takes once
it brakes be cool dawgs if you need something call or pm
see ya later

Re: telltale pressure?

Just something to think about here...but I know on my motor I have a little bit larger diameter tubing for my tell tale. So naturally the pressure isn't as high and the stream isn't quite as strong as some outboards. I have a pretty solid flow, but it is a weaker stream.

As far as I'm concerened, if there is any water flowing good through there....then I know water is getting pumped and all should be fine.

One of the reasons I put the bigger tubing on (other than the fact it is what I had laying around) is that it doesn't seem to clog up as easily with salt/corrosion/build-up.

Re: telltale pressure?

whywhyzed -- A "T" off the tell tale is a very appropriate way water pressure gauges are installed and they read accurately. You need to remember that there is a lot more water passing out of the engine through the exhaust and out the prop hub than out the tell tale so in effect the tell tale is merely a "pin hole" in the grand scheme of things. Yes, you can put a pressure gauge in the tell tale without a T. The only thing you lose is the "visibility" of the flow.
