New control box,but will it work?

Somebody at work threw away a brand new control box (!!!) I,of coarse, grabbed it.
It is a teleflex universal that has Johnyrude cables already on it, tilt trim and a neutral lock out, light years better than the one I have now.
Problem 1, it is a top mount, mine now is a side mount and I have push to choke on my current box.
My current box('81) has a lever you move up to advance the timing for cold start, does the neutral lock out do the same thing or no?

I also have a CMC tilt trim, should the wires on the new box work the CMC?
I already checked the iboats store and can get a key switch for cheap, my main concern is if the neutral lock out will advance my timing enough to start the motor and should the tilt trim switch work with my CMC unit?
If I can't start the boat or trim the engine I think I will skip this project.
All input is appreciated

Re: New control box,but will it work?

After I posted I remembered I had a couple key switches laying around and found a push to choke Honda switch once, again, this should work yes?
Just use the key switch and pitch the mounting plate.
I will test fit the control cables first to make sure the travel and action of the new one will work on my motor('81 50 Evinrude) then jump the tilt trim wires in to make sure I can get them to work before I actually start tearing anything apart.
Making a new part to attach the throttle to tommoro morning, so if I goof it up I will still have somewhere to go back to.
I'm thinking I am gonna do it unless someone tells me it can't be done,
thoughts anyone?

Tilt trim works, turns out it is only 3 wires YEA!!
Next is the ignition switch, I have 6 wires on the honda switch and haven't looked at mine yet, hoping that is a straight switch too.

Just test fitted the box and it works exactly as it should shift and throttle now to the ignition switch with its myriad or wires.
Have I mentioned my utter hatred of wiring?

Turns out, after I broke down and got my glasses out, there are letters on the back of the switches, got the new one to fire the engine and hit the choke so I am going in first thing tommorro.

Done, need to tie up some wires and clean up but everythig works like it should, tach TT, overheat alarm, choke, and it even runs!
About the hardest part was figuring out where to put the key switch.
The new box is so much smother than the old one and the install is alot cleaner with no wires hanging out in the open.
Having a real button for the TT is nice, get rid of the hose clamp and black tape.
Took some before and after pics, I will paint the new side board later, I made that from .090 and a 1/2" wider than the old one that was .080 so it is sturdier to boot.
Check out the jury rig I had to do on my soldering iron.
Putting it in the boat first thing this morning I broke the tip, the hardware store didn't open for a couple hours and I didn't want to wait so I took some really heavy copper wire and made a new one, works better than the one that broke, might just leave it that way.

Nice work :)

Sorry nobody caught up with your questions... looks like you did just fine on your own, though.

Re: New control box,but will it work?

I was pretty sure it would work and I got with one of the old OMC mechanics at work.
I tested everything before I started tearing anything apart, don't want to disable the boat, I would hate to miss a fishing trip because I jacked up my own boat.
Now the only original parts are the hull, motor and trolling motor but I have a line on a troller.

Re: New control box,but will it work?

I am about ready to do a similar project, installing a power trim helm switch to a newly installed CMC unit. I was just going to tie in the three wires after the fuse holder to the existing switch lead which is going to be located on the forward deck by the trolling motor. Was wondering if this is how you did yours. I hope this post is not considered hijacking, I figured the best place to get an answer was to talk to someone who had already done the modification. Thanks.

Re: New control box,but will it work?

I knew that was way to easy, just started it on the muffs and it won't pee, at least I know for sure the overheat alarm still works.
Haven't changed the impeller in awhile so it is due and at least I found it in the driveway not after we launched to fish sat.

I looked on iboats and there pump kits jump from 35 to 85 horse, no 50, did I miss it or they don't have them?
