This is my first experience for semipermanent mooring along side a dock on ocean estuary. I have a 24 ft center console outboard that will be moored along a new wooden dock on a bay off the Atlantic Ocean. The tides are normally small (1 to 2 ft) and the dock is protected from open water and winds. What type mooring equipment and style mooring is suggested? What experiences have you had with this one side mooring? I am open to all suggestions but I cannot add additional pilings to the setup.

thanks, nrb

Check out the stand-off mooring whips. Pretty cool set-up. I have never used them but have heard they work great.

I dock along side as well, but what you do not say, is if it is a floating dock, or a fixed dock. It makes a difference on how you tie up. I dock on a floating dock, and it is very easy.

I am going to assume a floating dock, since you said dock not pier. You will need 4 lines, and 2 fenders. I like big fenders, 10" or so.

One Fender off the side at the stern corner. On amidship, bout where the hull curves away from the dock

From the bow of your boat run a line to the dock, about 3 feet in front of your boat.

If you are docked, starboard side to the dock, run a line from the port side stern corner to the dock, about 3 feet past the end on your boat.

These two lines will keep the boat tight against the dock.

From the midship cleat, run one line forward to the dock, and one line rearward to the dock. They are your spring lines, that will keep the boat from moving back and forth with the tide.

Re: Need advice on boat mooring

Thanks for the prompt answers. What I did not say... The dock, pier is fixed as in a shoreline wooden dock with 4 pilings along the edge. It is not floating. I am most concerned about rubbing the dock and pilings, so I want advice about the mooring whips and other standoff contraptions. I have another boat docked for years in a slip so I have experience with the lines. I have no experience with the standoff needs.

thanks jollymon and fishmen111

Let me rephrase the question. Any advice or suggestions about mooring whips of other types of holdoffs?

our boat sits there never touches the dock. 3 feet waves, blowing storms. it is in the wide open of the Florida keys. the next best thing is a lift.
