Primer way too thick

I am currently restoring my 15' fiberglass runabout. About 5 days ago I applied the primer to the entire hull using a roller and brush. It wasnt until afterwards I realized I put it on way thicker than recommended, and there are many drips/runs. I figured I could just sand it and it wouldnt be that big of a deal. I started sanding to realize the paint was still wet deep down. The wet paint just clogs up the sandpaper instantly. I am kicking myself for not just spraying it - I dont know what I was thinking.

My question is will the paint continue to dry and how long until it does. The recomennded DWT is 2 mils - some of the drips are probably bewteen 10-15!

I think I might just work on everything else and just leave that for now to dry more. Ill just have to keep sanding then letting it dry over and over until its smooth again. I just took 8 steps backwards!

Any thoughts / ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

What kind of primer did you use? Did you reduce it and if so, what kind of reducer?

Do not feel bad about taking a few steps backwards. I bet it would be hard to find anyone on the forum that has not done the same thing. That is part of the learning curve. There an old saying. "Ask me how hard it is or how long it takes me after the second time I have done it".

What ever paint you used will dry but how long?
depends on a lot of things.
If not too many runs you may try cutting them off with a razor blade or scraping them off.
That will also help them dry.
You will have some sanding work ahead of you after things dry.

When ever you have a problem like that use the solvent that you clean your tools with, it will be messy but you will be able (should be able) to remove all the paint let it dry for a day and start sanding to smooth finish and then spray-a-way(lighty).Jim
