1980 19ft MFG Bowrider, with Nice Trailer.
4 Cylinder Inboard/Outboard OMC engine, not winterized 2007, runs, but freeze plugs need replacing. Fish Finder included.

$1500.00 O.B.O.

I saw this ad and had to share it with the forum. It's for sale in upstate NY so you know the thing is broken. This guy thinks just replace the freeze plugs and off you go. I did not put the phone number or link so the thread would not look like a sale.

The worst thing is he might know that the motor is screwed but he is pawning it off like it is just a simple fix.

Or he is just dumb and doesn't know what damage it really has done.

What gets me is when you have these ads CL with these older boat motors (1970's models), I have seen 2 sellers that claimed the motor is worth the asking price of the whole boat, which was $1600. I see the same motors for sale for a few hundred dollars.

The thing is, there'll be someone who doesn't look into what you need to watch out for in a boat purchase, or ask someone who does know, about this ad they are interested in, and go look at the boat, see that it runs and buy it...not even paying attention to the BIG RED FLAG RIGHT IN THE POSTING " not winterized 2007"

Craigslist ads tend to be poor in content, they do not require any specific details like year, engine, drive, nothing useful usually.

Sorry I have to comment on that also. I have also seen alot of boat ads listed on there that didn't specify the year of the boat or motor . This is another reason why I am trying to start my own local ads website for the area I live in. I have it listed that items must have a description on my site.

You have to admit there are a lot of gems out there on Craigs. I found my Starcraft listed under "Old Boat For Sale".

I concur. It's well worth digging through the crappy ones to find a good one.

I was looking for a 18-19' bowrider for $10k or under here in Louisville last spring. Everything I look at around town (private owner or dealership) was ratty at best and they wanted at least $10k even for the cheapest of boats.

After scouring craigslist for a few weeks I stumbled on my '98 Rinker listed at $8,200. After talking to the seller on the phone he came down to $7,200, and I headed off to look at it. While it was a 4hr drive to go see it, he came down to a selling price of $7,000 and I left him a $500 deposit with a sea trial in the plans before I would finalize the deal.

All said and done, with a little leg work and a few hours spent driving I saved well over $3k on the purchase of my "new" boat, and have something that is 200times as nice as anything I could find locally.

Craigslist is a great tool for the savvy consumer. If you aren'y savvy or don't want to take the time to investigate thuroughly then stay away.

There are some great deals that show up on Craig's List, but a guy has to know what to look for or there's a big risk.

Also, the great deals go fast. I logged in the other day, and right up near the top someone was selling a really pristine looking Johnson 10hp from 1957, complete with two pressure tanks. The seller said it ran perfectly. $200! Well, I'm not in the market, but when I went back an hour later the ad was gone. Someone made a few bucks on that one. I'm kicking myself.

It's also a great place to sell boats and other marine stuff. What I've found is that if you actually do write a good description, disclose any flaws, and are honest, you sell your stuff quickly.

I did not try to bash craigslist, I just think they should have some template or strawman to use for vehicles and require year, brand, engine, new/used, miles/hours, etc. Of course that would probably increase the cost, but then craigslist could categorize for searches even better. On some of the ads you cannot tell what year or brand or engine or anything useful...maybe they should offer a stickie titled "Craigslist for DUMMIES"...!!!

Re: Craigs List Ad

Just in the last 4 months I have sold a PWC ('04 Honda) within one day on CL, traded a Yukon for a 325i BMW (GREAT trade on my part) then sold a boat ('89 Four Winns) and bought another ('98 Four Winns) on the same day. All of these transactions didn't cost me a dime.
Craigslist rocks. It works and it's FREE....what more could you possibly ask?

Re: Craigs List Ad

I'm stuck up here in Alaska and every day I get on Craigslist looking for a project boat and I send an email of it back to myself if it looks interesting and after a week or so I revisit to see if its still listed, purpose of all this is so that when I am done working up here I will travel down to around Orlando get a place to stay for a week or two and hop in a rental and go check out all of those still listed and generally look around. I have seen some steals but there is nothing I can do except wish and wait.

I agree the listings are sometimes vague and some sellers even more so with almost no contact info.
