Buy the way thanks to both of you on the starting lesson, it fired up just like you both explained. I need to put a water pump in the motor because it just a safety measure for just buying the boat. Normally how hot is the water suppost to be out of the pee tube. I can hold my hand under it for about 3 seconds and its hot all the time running. The lake temp where I've been running it for testing before a long haul is 65 degrees. Also, from past experience it shouldn't take a couple of mins to start peeing out of the tube on first start should it?

The telltale water is water that has passed through the thermostats. It is a sample from the hose from the thermostats to the adapter plate under the motor.

When the engine is cold, there is very little water available there, and none coming out the telltale would be a normal indication.

Whatever comes out of the telltale has passed through an open thermostat, so it will be at least as hot as the thermostat (140 degrees)

hope it helps

I got an xr6 and the water that comes out it's tee'd before the t-stats.
water comes up from the pump then tee'd up to the t-stats and to the tell hose .
Just wondering since you guys say it's after the t-stats.

That hose going downward from the T-stats does not go to the pump. It goes to the base plate, and on into the exhaust.

Water is let out of the heads by the T-stats, thus the water in the hose has already been through the T-stats.

Re: 150 XR6 Question Again

I spoke with a mecanic when I was buying a pump kit and he said if I wanted to cut the t-stat like you do on older chevy motors to let more water flow. This makes since in my trucks I run, but what would this do to a the outboard in the long run? On Jonrudes the water normally is close to the water temp of the lake, so is hot something I need to get use to or is there something I'm missing?

Re: 150 XR6 Question Again

The Mercury cooling system is quite intricate in function, with relief ports, poppit valves, thermostats and all that. There are differences from engine to engine depending on it's design power and performance.

Unless you are setting up a flat out racing engine leave the cooling system alone. Mercury knew what they were doing when they designed it. If it doesn't work right, something is wrong with it.

I've seen engines screwed up trying to mod the cooling system so it will work finally give up the ghost, and when they're torn down, the base plate will be full of sand and sea shells, or the remains of that rotten log hit in the river a year ago.

hope it helps
