I assume "ran like crap" means it didn't run good, but it's not descriptive enough for anyone to help you. Could you be more specific?

Re: engine problem

Have you checked for spark on both cylinders? Good or bad? What do the spark plugs look like? Wet or dry? Fresh fuel?

Re: engine problem

Had the same problem last year, replaced the entire ignition system and nothing, turned out to be a dirty main jet(Ignition parts $140, what it cost to fix the actual problem $0, lesson learned priceless)
You have fire and air so the only thing you are missing is fuel, clean your carbs.
Pay special attention to the main jet, pull the drain plug and get a really skinny screwdriver as it is inside that hole.
I use a peice of stripped copper wire, pull strands off until it just fits, work it back and forth a couple times and reassemble.
An easy way to see if that is your problem is to start the engine, easier on muffs but can be done in the water( not recomended) and squirt gas in to the carbs one at a time if it is a dirty jet the engine will run really good when you are squirting the gas in then go back to crappy when you quit.

Ya, pull the drain plug on the carb bowl, then you have to stick a straight screw driver(really skinny) into the hole to get the jet out.
Like I said, use a stranded copper wire to clean it, you don't want to use anything harder than the material the jet is made from.
I couldn't see a difference after I was done but the engine sure could.
