Ok, my 1998 50HP outboard johnson started leaking lower end fluid out from where the prop enters the lower unit. This was the first time I started the motor this spring(started, idled, put in gear for a minute, shut off, ran a total of 5 minutes), just pulled it out of the storage. I have never seen it leak from this location before. The fluid was a solid black, was NOT milky. I pulled of the prop and the anode piece and found a lot of fishing line ran around the shaft.

Where could the fluid be coming from? How do I troubleshoot to find the leak. Does anyone have a diagram or picture of where the seals are or how to replace them?

It would be nice to find a pictoral HOW-TO online if its possible.

Thanks!

When gear oil turns black the oil is worn out _ that happens with any oil of any kind if you don't change it regularly.

The fishing line overheats the seals on your prop shaft. You will need to have them replaced. You might as well do all of the gearcase seals while you are at it.

Does anyone just have a diagram where the seal is and a simple instruction on the appropriate steps to removing and installing a new seal?

Thanks.

Is there a section in this forum that actually discusses the repair of outboard motors? (not just to go and buy a manual)
