curious....who are they? ...and yes they are right you need an adapter that fits over the splines of the driveshaft and a wrench to hold the pinion nut....

bet ya broke the upper seal housing, common rookie mistake.
you will need the splined tool and a good box end wrench of the correct size, if you have access to a junk crank you can cut off the splined end and weld a 1/2 drive socket to it.
other than that its all in the service manual, they are very simple cases.

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOO
you have enough problems, quit creating them.
if I tell you a secret you have to promise not to tell.
once the bearing carrier and the propshaft are removed, clamp the driveshaft in a vise with soft jaws.
then using a 3/8ths drive breaker bar and the correct sized socket simply unscrew the pinion nut. the gearcase and bar will rotate around the shaft, to install subsitute the bar for the torque wrench.

I have also "Made" a tool out of a close fitting deep socket and a small rod or a drill bit to adapt to the driveshaft splines. Just be careful not to let it slip and damage the splines.
As Rodbolt said. " You didnt here it from me"
