I am not sure if this is the right forum, but if not it will be moved. A co-worker is looking at a boat with a 65 hp evinrude. The owner says it needs a tune up and the steering cable is broke. How much time/trouble/money is involved in replacing a steering cable on that size motor? Is there any maintenance that I should be doing to my steering cable? It looks old but it works.
Thanks
Eterry

Depends on whether you can get it out of the tilt tube without removing the motor from the boat. Also depends on how deeply it is buried in the boat and how much stuff the installer bundled to it. Can be fairly easy, or can be fairly difficult.

Greasing it sure wouldn't hurt! I think they usually get stuck after sitting without use for long periods of time. It might be a good idea to crank your steering wheel full port and full starboard every once in a while when you are out in the garage.

Regular preventative maintenance demands that the cable be kept lubricated where it slides in and out of the tilt tube. Ignore it and the tube rusts inside and locks up the cable. Then you REALLY have trouble.
