Engine in question is a 91 20hp 2-stroke johnson long shaft outboard.

It ran perfect, and never leaked oil before.

I took the engine off the damaged boat I got, and layed it down in the boat to transport everything home safeley. (transom was rotted, could barley support engine just sitting there, no way in hell bouncind down the highway)

A week later i remove the engine, and store it upright, a few month later i attach it to my boat, and hook everything up.

it took a few pulls to get it started, and started and idled good.

ran it for a minuet then shut it down. (yes garden hose was attached)

then a few minutes later I noticed a drip of oil coming out of the propeller opening.

where every hour or so a bit more would drop out.

its been 2 days now, a has probably leaked out about an ouce so far.

it not steady, or constant, just a random drop evey 1-8 hours.

this a problem?

the fluid in there is probably a year old.

also: how does one change the fluid/oil

wow, searching sure does do a lot.

it could be unburtn fuel from idleing, but dosnt smell too much like gas.

so how should I do about changing my oil/fluid stuff? and the word on the street is there are drain plug gaskets... where do i get thoes? boat shop? or auto some maybe?

Re: Outboard driping oil, problem?

there will be 2 screws/plugs on your leg. I get a big bucket, put it under my leg, open the bottom screw (its a flat head, and may require tapping with a mallet to get her off) and then open the top screw. oil will pour out. at this point check your bottom screw/plug as it's probably got a magnet attached to it. this is to collect any metal debris. If you find any, clean it off. As long as it's not a lot, I don't think there's a need to worry. go buy yourself the appropiate oil to refill. I'm not an expert on here, but I think if your motor is pre-1979 or something like that, you need a type 3 oil??? I'm sure your marina will know the type you need if you tell him your engine model.year. fill from the bottom screw hole, when oil starts to flow out the top screw hole, have your girlfriend put the plug in the top screw hole. (I use my girlfriend, but ti's a long way for her to go, i'm sure you can find a replacement.) after top plug is in, quickly screw in bottom plug.

Oh yeah, while at marina, don't forget to order 2 more of those little rubber o-rings for the plugs. I didn't remember one year, and my oil got milky.

hope this helped, as you can probably guess, i'm usually the one asking the questions, not answering them.
